Close to the Suffolk / Cambridgeshire border is the Imperial War Museum Duxford. Lying just south of Cambridge, Europe’s biggest aviation museum is a magnet to people of all ages and its permanent exhibition AirSpace has on display some of the most well known aircraft in the world: Lancaster, Spitfire, Concorde and Vulcan.
Another permanent exhibition is dedicated to the Battle of Britain where visitors can explore the personal stories of the personnel who served at RAF Duxford and the pivotal role that the station played during WWII. The first Spitfires flew from here and there is even a Messerschmitt Bf 109 on display.
There are also parts of the museum dedicated to tanks and other pieces of war machinery. The Normandy Experience allowes visitors to experience some of the sights and sounds of the D-Day landings and to learn about the men and women who served in D-Day operations. Military vehicles are on display, which include General Montgomery’s wartime caravans where he lived and worked.
Events take place throughout the year at Duxford, including air shows, photography days, flying experiences and more.
