The Barn at Assington

Based on a farm in Assington, just a few miles out of Sudbury, The Barn is a pleasant collection of businesses comprising a tea room serving homemade cakes, cream teas and light lunches; a farm shop, garden centre and gift shop. There is also an animal enclosure, and an holistic therapy centre offering an array of relaxing treatments and nails and beauty therapies.

The farm shop sells a range of locally made james, chutneys and cakes, as well as hampers filled with locally sourced goodies. Other locally grown, seasonal produce is also available and regular farmers’ markets and craft fairs are held throughout the year.

Not far from there is Assington Mill, where you can learn a rural craft or skill, such as how to build a windmill (!) goat husbandry, basket weaving, feltmaking – the wonderfully eclectic list goes on. Do look at their website to find out more. They also have a lovely self-catering cottage on site, if you want to make a weekend of it.

Also nearby is Arger Fen & Spouse’s Vale, an ancient woodland with a mix of trees including oak, ash, field maple, holly, crab apple, superb large alder and hazel stools. This reserve is also one of only a few ancient woodlands in Suffolk with wild cherry.

The best time to visit is during the blubell season in the spring. The display is fabulous and if you listen carefully, you may also catch a song or two from the woodland birdsĀ  – listen out for black cap, whitethroat and the willow warbler.
