Discover Newmarket

Guided tours around Newmarket in SuffolkIf you love horseracing, then a visit to Newmarket must be at the top of your list of things to do during your stay in Suffolk.

The town lies to the far west of the county and is known as the ‘home of horseracing’.  It has the largest centre for breeding world class thoroughbred race horses and the largest training centre in the country; over 50 training stables and two racecourses.

A programme of guided tours are available, showing visitors how the industry works, what goes on behind the scenes and what’s involved in producing a future winner – from the stud to the racecourse.

There are eleven tours available including a two hour walking tour of the town; an early morning tour of the Newmarket Gallops to see the stunning sight of hundreds of horses as they exercise, followed by a visit to a training stable, breakfast and a tour of The National Stud; and a tour of The Jockey Club where visitors will learn about the history of horseracing and view the extensive collection of sporting art and memorabilia, followed by a tradional afternoon tea.

Newmarket is also home to the National Horseracing Museum in the centre of the town, which is included in several of the tours on offer.

There is plenty to do in Newmarket during the evenings too, with plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from and the fabulous summer concerts, Newmarket Nights, which take place at the open-air Adnams July Course each year.
