Gainsborough’s House | Sudbury

Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury is a museum of national importance with a permanent exhibition of the work of one of England’s greatest painters, Thomas Gainsborough (1727 – 1788). Undergoing a massive and exciting redevelopment during 2020/2021, a brand new landmark building is creating new galleries, viewing platforms and exhibition space.

The house where he was born and lived can be restored and refurbished whilst a new shop and cafe will overlook the historic garden and its ancient mulberry tree, planted during the reign of King James I to encourage  establishment of the silk industry. (A silk industry was indeed established in Sudbury and still thrives today).

The existing Gainsborough print workshop with its programme of classes and studio will also be safeguarded and improved.
