Hedingham Castle’s Norman keep, 110 feet high, is arguably the best preserved in the whole of England. Built by Aubrey de Vere, Earl of Oxford c.1140, it’s still owned by his descendants and nestles on the North Essex/South Suffolk border only an hour or so from London.

There are four floors to explore, including a magnificent Banqueting Hall spanned by a remarkable 28 foot arch.  A good view of this splendid room can be obtained from the Minstrels’ Gallery, built within the thickness of the 12 foot walls.

A visit to the castle and its beautiful landscaped grounds including secluded walks and gardens with a lake, is ideal for a family outing, and during the summer there are a variety of special events which bring its colourful history alive. You can enjoy atmospheric outdoor Shakespeare theatre and concerts, medieval jousting tournaments, snowdrop Sundays, classic car days or bird of prey flights.
