Orford Ness National Nature Reserve | Orford
Orford Quay Orford Woodbridge Suffolk IP12 2NU
Orford Ness is a wild and remote National Trust Site, special both for its internationally important coastline habitat and 20th century military history.
It’s the largest vegetated shingle spit in Europe, containing shingle, salt marsh, mudflat, brackish lagoons and grazing marsh – all vital for breeding and passage birds as well as for the shingle flora.
The Ness was also secret military site from 1913 until the mid 1980s with forbidding buildings looming over the landscape.
Access to the Ness is via foot ferry from the Trust’s office on Orford Quay only – visitors follow a 5 mile route but tractor drawn trailer tours can be booked over the summer. No dogs are permitted.
