Thornham Walks nr Stonham Aspal

Thornham Walks was a real eye-opener!

It’s 12 miles of waymarked footpaths on the Thornham Estate managed by the Henniker-Major family to maintain public access. It’s a real triumph in developing an area of natural beauty without over-developing it, which often happens.

It is wheelchair-friendly with a well-constructed footpath from the walled garden, (which houses a brilliant charity called “Beyond the Wall” helping young people with disabilities), along to a great little bird hide, from which we spotted a stunning peacock, as well as lots of robins milling about and a couple of woodpeckers. Have a look at Beyond the Wall’s Website here

The pathway is dotted with a fascinating rock trail, plants and trees with many carvings of the ‘Green Man’ – spirit of the trees.  It takes the walker through the woods, leading to a Victorian gothic  folly.

There are activities all year round, and they are constantly seeking new volunteers to help out.

There is a tea room and a couple of craft/ gift shops there, as well as some fascinating animals carved from wood in the kiddies playground. The Thornham Coach House restaurant is also within the grounds, which serves a fabulous home-cooked lunch.

Dogs on leads are welcome.
